Keep it Local

Anderson Falls, Columbus, IN

During the pandemic, my Dad and I did not stop traveling. My dad is in his nineties and we lived in Indiana for part of the year. Throughout the summer and fall we instituted “Explore Indiana Saturdays”. We would pick a different destination each week. Sometimes it was a state park, a historic town or a museum. Other times we just found a unique restaurant. The photo above is of Anderson Falls in Columbus, Indiana. We discovered the Indiana Military Museum in Vincennes and my Dad decided to donate some of his military items from his service in the Vietnam War to the museum. That really was special for him and we never would have known about the opportunity if we hadn't gone out to explore our local community. Here are some ideas to help you explore your community.

  1. Visit the beach, a lake or a river

  2. Explore a nearby city

  3. Go to a nearby state or national park

  4. Explore a small town or village

  5. Take a short road trip

  6. Take a hike

  7. Go camping

  8. Visit a local museum or art gallery

  9. Find a new and unique restaurant

  10. Go on a scavenger hunt in your hometown

  11. Visit a historical site in your state

For anyone traveling to Indiana, here are some of the local places we explored.

  1. Corydon - Indiana's first capital

  2. Vincennes - Indiana's first town

  3. George Rogers Clark National Historic Site

  4. Brown County State Park

  5. Spring Mill State Park

  6. Overlook Restaurant, Leavenworth

  7. Huber's Family Farm Restaurant, Borden

  8. Anderson Falls, Columbus

  9. Lake Monroe

  10. Marengo Cave
